Akamai Technologies is older than most of the internet services it now protects. Founded at MIT in 1998 to solve the internet's early congestion problems (its founding insight was literally a result of Tim Berners-Lee asking an MIT professor to work on the problem of web traffic distribution), Akamai built one of the first global CDN networks and spent two decades quietly becoming the load-bearing infrastructure beneath enormous portions of the internet. Today it serves 15–30% of all global internet traffic, operates over 4,000 points of presence in 135 countries, and has expanded from pure CDN into cloud security, DDoS mitigation, edge computing, and zero-trust network access — making it more of an internet infrastructure conglomerate than a simple content delivery company.

The scale at which Akamai operates creates a kind of network effect for reliability: its distributed architecture means no single point of failure can take down the entire network, and its Intelligent Platform is designed to route around regional outages automatically. However, its Edge DNS service — one of the most widely used authoritative DNS solutions for major enterprises — has experienced incidents where DNS resolution failures created cascading problems for websites and services that rely on Akamai for authoritative name resolution. A 2021 Edge DNS outage briefly took down major sites including PlayStation Network, UPS, Delta Air Lines, and Airbnb simultaneously.

When specific Akamai services have problems, the effects are oblique — end users see problems on the customer websites Akamai serves rather than on an "Akamai" branded page. A degraded Akamai network manifests as: websites returning "Reference #..." styled error pages (Akamai's error format), download speeds dropping dramatically for software or media delivered via Akamai's media delivery network, DDoS protection services triggering false positives that block legitimate traffic, Edge DNS resolution failing for domains that use Akamai's authoritative DNS, and security products like Kona Site Defender returning incorrect block responses for benign traffic patterns.
