Elevance Health — formerly Anthem — is one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States, serving approximately 40 million members through commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP plans across dozens of states. Originally founded as the Hospital Bureau of Indiana in 1944, the company grew through a series of acquisitions including WellPoint and, in recent years, rebranded to Elevance Health to reflect an expanded mission beyond insurance. Members access their coverage through the Sydney Health app and the Anthem website, which provide ID cards, benefit summaries, claims history, provider search, and cost estimation tools.

The Sydney Health platform and the legacy Anthem member portal share backend infrastructure that integrates with Elevance's claims processing systems, provider network databases, pharmacy benefit management services (handled through IngenioRx), and behavioral health platforms. Members cannot download or view their digital insurance ID card when the app or portal is unavailable, creating problems at provider offices.
