BeReal arrived in 2020 with a premise that was deliberately anti-curation: every day, at a random time, the app sends a notification and gives users two minutes to take a simultaneous front-and-back camera photo. No filters, no editing, no scheduling — just a raw, unpolished snapshot of whatever the user is actually doing at that moment. The anti-Instagram philosophy resonated with a younger audience fatigued by the performance of social media, and BeReal experienced explosive growth in 2022 when it became one of the most downloaded apps globally. Voodoo, the French mobile gaming company, acquired BeReal in 2024.

BeReal's social architecture is deliberately constrained compared to traditional social platforms. Users see only their friends' posts, and they cannot see friends' BeReals until they have posted their own — a design choice that enforces the reciprocal authenticity the app is built around. The notification system is the heartbeat of the product: the daily random notification triggers mass simultaneous usage, creating a predictable, extreme load spike that BeReal's infrastructure must absorb within the two-minute capture window. Late posts are logged with a timestamp showing how many minutes late the user was, making prompt posting culturally significant within the app's community.

BeReal service disruptions are particularly visible because of the time-critical notification and posting cycle. Notification delivery failures — where the daily prompt does not arrive, or arrives significantly delayed — break the shared social experience that the app is built around, since the value of BeReal depends on friends posting simultaneously. Photo upload failures within the two-minute window prevent users from posting on time, showing an error or spinning indefinitely rather than completing the post. Friend feed loading failures prevent users from seeing their friends' BeReals after posting, removing the reward that drives the daily interaction. The app's backend load spikes dramatically at notification time globally, and capacity constraints during these spikes cause general slowness and failure rates across all functionality simultaneously.
