Better Stack was founded in Prague in 2020 as a modern alternative to legacy monitoring and on-call tools — products like PagerDuty, StatusPage, and older uptime monitoring services that many developers found expensive, clunky, or both. The platform combines uptime monitoring (HTTP, TCP, ping, keyword checks), incident management and on-call alerting, a status page builder, and a log management and observability layer (Logtail, later rebranded under the Better Stack brand) into a single product with a pricing model designed to be approachable for smaller engineering teams. The monitoring infrastructure runs globally distributed checking nodes that verify endpoint availability from multiple geographic locations simultaneously, reducing false positives from regional network blips.
