Check Point Software Technologies invented the commercial stateful inspection firewall in 1993 and has been defending that position — and expanding from it — for three decades. Gil Shwed's foundational FireWall-1 patent shaped how the industry thought about network security for years, and the company's SmartCenter management architecture established the model of centralised policy management that most enterprise firewall vendors eventually adopted. Today Check Point competes across network security, cloud security, endpoint protection, and mobile threat defence under the Infinity architecture, which aims to provide consolidated security across every attack surface from a single management console.

The SmartConsole and SmartCenter management layer is where enterprise administrators spend most of their time — writing and publishing security policies, reviewing logs, and managing gateway updates. SmartCenter availability is a prerequisite for policy changes, meaning a management server outage freezes security operations even when gateways themselves continue to enforce existing rules. Harmony Endpoint, Check Point's EDR product, communicates with a cloud-based management console and a local policy server; connectivity failures in either layer leave endpoint agents running on cached policy.
