Clever
Clever is a digital learning platform used by U.S. schools to provide students and teachers with single sign-on access to ed-tech apps.
What is Clever?
Clever became the dominant single sign-on and rostering platform in US K-12 education by solving a genuinely painful problem: connecting hundreds of different EdTech applications to hundreds of different district student information systems without requiring manual data entry or individual IT configuration for each integration. Founded in 2012, Clever built a standardised integration layer that EdTech vendors implement once to reach thousands of districts, and that districts connect once to provision their entire application portfolio. By the early 2020s, Clever claimed to be used by more than half of US K-12 students. Kahoot acquired Clever in 2021.
The platform provides SSO for students through Clever Badges (QR codes for younger students who cannot type passwords), Google login, and traditional username-password flows. Rostering pushes class lists, teacher assignments, and student demographic data from district SIS platforms like PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, and Skyward to connected EdTech applications. District administrators manage application access permissions, class assignments, and co-teacher configurations through the Clever dashboard. The integration library covers thousands of EdTech products, making Clever an industry-standard connection point.
Clever outages affect the entire EdTech ecosystem within a district simultaneously. Students scanning their Clever Badges find the camera scan fails or returns a login error, blocking access without an alternative authentication path. SSO launches from the Clever portal return SAML errors from downstream applications, meaning the LMS, reading platform, and assessment tool all become inaccessible at the same time. Rostering sync failures cause class lists in connected applications to go stale — teachers find students missing from their digital rosters, or students who have transferred still appearing in classes they have left.
