This intentional simplicity made it simultaneously strange and beloved on an internet that moved relentlessly toward complexity.

Craigslist's longevity and cultural penetration are remarkable for a service that has actively resisted modernization. It remains one of the most visited websites in the United States, operating in over 700 cities in 70 countries and serving as the primary marketplace for local housing rentals, used cars, furniture, job listings, and personal services in many mid-size US cities where alternatives have not achieved comparable local density. Its minimal infrastructure means the barrier to hosting is low but also means the service has fewer redundancy layers than modern platforms.

Craigslist outages are relatively rare given the simplicity of its architecture, but when they occur they typically manifest as posting submissions returning errors and not going through, the site returning 502 or 504 gateway errors from its load balancers, the image upload function failing when attaching photos to a listing, account authentication failing to grant access to posting history, and the search function returning no results or timing out on high-volume categories.
