Descript reimagined audio and video editing by treating a transcript as the primary editing surface — delete a word from the text and the corresponding audio and video are removed automatically. Founded in 2017 by Andrew Mason, who previously co-founded Groupon, Descript began as an audio editing tool and expanded into full video production, adding screen recording, automatic transcription powered by its Whisper-grade speech models, multitrack editing, and its striking Overdub feature, which lets creators generate synthetic voice that matches their own vocal signature using AI.
