Devin is an AI software engineer by Cognition that autonomously handles coding tasks, bug fixes, and deployments in a real development environment.

What is Devin?

Devin landed in early 2024 as the first widely publicised autonomous software engineering agent — an AI system that doesn't just complete a single prompt but actively plans, executes, tests, and iterates on complex engineering tasks in a sandboxed development environment. Cognition's system provisions a full development environment including a browser, terminal, and code editor for each task session, then operates within it like a human engineer would: reading documentation, writing code, running tests, reading error output, and revising its approach based on results. The demo videos showing Devin completing multi-step software engineering challenges attracted extraordinary attention from the developer community and venture capital alike.

The infrastructure behind Devin differs fundamentally from typical AI API services. Each active Devin task requires a persistent, sandboxed compute environment — essentially a virtual machine with network access, installed toolchains, and persistent state — that must remain available for the entire duration of the task, which can span minutes to hours. This makes Devin's infrastructure costs and operational complexity much higher than stateless inference services. Task orchestration, environment provisioning, the browser and terminal sessions, and the LLM calls that drive decision-making are all separate components that must remain healthy simultaneously for a task to complete successfully.

When Devin's infrastructure has problems, the failure modes are distinctive. Newly submitted tasks may fail to provision their sandboxed environments, returning an error before the agent has taken a single action. Tasks that are mid-execution can lose connectivity to their environment sandbox, causing the agent to stall with no further progress and eventually time out. The Slack integration — through which teams can assign tasks to Devin without leaving their communication tool — can lose webhook connectivity independently from the core platform. Completed tasks that successfully produced code changes may fail to sync those changes back to the user's repository if the Git integration is impaired.

Outage.gg tracks Devin platform status using community reports from engineering teams and developers. If tasks are failing to start, active tasks have stalled, or the Slack integration has stopped responding, the live status page shows current incident data.

Common Devin Problems

Issues users most frequently report when Devin is having problems.

1

Service unavailability

API calls are failing, dashboards are unreachable, or the service is returning 5xx errors.

2

Slow performance / high latency

Response times are significantly above normal, causing timeouts and degraded user experience.

3

Authentication failures

API keys, OAuth tokens, or SSO logins are being rejected unexpectedly.

4

Data sync & storage issues

Files, databases, or synced data are not updating, missing, or inaccessible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Devin outages and server status.

You can check the live Devin server status at outage.gg/services/devin. The page shows real-time community-submitted outage reports, an hourly trend chart, and the current health status.

Devin can stop working for a number of reasons including scheduled maintenance windows, unexpected server failures, network infrastructure problems, or DDoS attacks. Check the live status page on Outage.gg for the latest community reports to see if others are experiencing the same issue.

Go to outage.gg/services/devin and click the "Report an Issue" button. Your report is counted immediately and helps confirm whether a problem is widespread. Reports from multiple users trigger a status change visible to everyone watching the page.

Click the "Notify Me" bell button on the Devin status page at outage.gg/services/devin. Create a free account and we will send you an email the moment Devin comes back online — no app download required.

Many services maintain official status pages with planned maintenance notices. Outage.gg aggregates real-time community-reported outages which often surface faster than official channels.
