Didi
Didi is China's dominant ride-hailing platform, connecting hundreds of millions of passengers with drivers across China and select international markets.
What is Didi?
DiDi is the dominant ride-hailing platform in China and one of the most important mobility technology companies in the world by transaction volume. Founded in Beijing in 2012, it consolidated China's fragmented ride-hailing market — absorbing Kuaidi Dache and defeating Uber China in a costly market share battle that ended with DiDi buying Uber's Chinese operations in 2016 — to reach a position of near-total dominance in its home market, serving hundreds of millions of users across China. DiDi has also expanded internationally to markets across Latin America, Australia, and South Africa through its 99 and DiDi International brands.
DiDi's scale in China is difficult to overstate: it completes tens of millions of rides per day, integrating real-time GPS tracking, dynamic pricing, driver-passenger matching, payments via Alipay and WeChat Pay, and safety features including ride monitoring and emergency contacts. The platform operates across multiple service categories including Express (standard), Premier, Luxe, Hitch (ridesharing), bike and e-bike sharing, and freight. In 2021, DiDi went public on the New York Stock Exchange, and within days Chinese regulators suspended new user registrations over data security concerns, triggering a crisis that led to the company's eventual delisting and restructuring.
When DiDi is experiencing platform problems, the impact is immediate: passengers cannot request rides or see driver availability. Driver apps that rely on DiDi for dispatch lose their incoming ride requests, directly affecting driver income. Real-time tracking and ETA updates within ongoing rides can stop updating. Payment processing failures at trip completion leave both drivers and passengers uncertain about whether charges were processed. In China's major cities, where DiDi is often the primary mode of on-demand transportation, platform outages have visible effects on urban mobility.
Outage.gg tracks DiDi service status with real-time community reports. If ride requests are failing or the app is unresponsive, the live status page will show the current scope of the disruption.
