What is E-Verify?

E-Verify is an internet-based employment eligibility verification system operated by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), launched in 1996 and administered from Washington, DC. It allows employers across the United States to verify the work authorization of newly hired employees by electronically comparing information from an employee's I-9 form against records in the Social Security Administration and Department of Homeland Security databases. With over a million employers enrolled and thousands of new-hire verifications submitted daily, any outage or server issues can delay hiring processes and create compliance risk for federally contracted employers required to use the system.
E-Verify operates as a web-based service hosted on federal government infrastructure and is required by law for federal contractors and mandatory under the laws of many US states for certain employer categories.
