FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer are the central management and logging components for large FortiGate deployments, handling policy distribution, firmware management, and log aggregation across potentially thousands of devices. FortiGuard Labs operates the threat intelligence subscription service that feeds signature updates, URL category data, and IP reputation information to FortiGate appliances — devices check in with FortiGuard servers on a continuous basis, and FortiGuard availability directly determines how current the threat intelligence is on every enrolled device. FortiCloud provides cloud-based management for smaller deployments and acts as the licensing validation authority for subscription features.

Fortinet service disruptions produce specific, recognisable failure patterns. FortiGuard connectivity failures cause appliances to log "FortiGuard service is unreachable" events, and features dependent on live lookups — DNS filtering, web filtering category checks, and antivirus signature updates — fall back to cached data that ages out over time. FortiManager policy deployments fail when the management plane cannot establish a FGFM tunnel to target devices, leaving fleet-wide policy changes stuck in pending status. License validation failures against FortiCloud cause UTM feature sets to enter a degraded mode where inspection capabilities are progressively disabled. SD-WAN orchestration through FortiManager breaks when the management database becomes unavailable, preventing dynamic path selection updates.
