Gorillas launched in Berlin in 2020 during the pandemic-era boom in instant grocery delivery, promising 10-minute delivery from its own network of urban dark stores — small warehouses strategically located within cycling distance of dense residential areas. The company raised capital aggressively and expanded across multiple European cities and into North America at remarkable speed, embodying the "growth before profitability" philosophy that defined the quick-commerce category. Getir, the Turkish quick-commerce pioneer, acquired Gorillas in 2022 as the industry consolidated under pressure from rising costs and retreating investor appetite for loss-making hyper-growth businesses.

The Gorillas model depended on software that could coordinate real-time inventory management, order processing, picker workflows inside dark stores, and last-mile rider dispatch simultaneously. The app needed to accurately reflect actual in-stock inventory — a technically harder problem than it sounds when stock turns over rapidly in small warehouses — and to promise delivery windows short enough to be genuinely differentiating. The rider operations layer required real-time GPS tracking, route optimisation, and handoff coordination between pickers and riders that had to work reliably during the volume spikes that coincide with meal prep and weekend shopping times.

Quick-commerce platform failures have an immediacy that makes them more frustrating than most e-commerce outages. Customers ordering for dinner delivery in a ten-minute window face a binary outcome — the order arrives in time or it does not, and a system failure during the order placement or confirmation step eliminates any possibility of getting food from an alternative source in time. Rider GPS tracking failures leave customers without delivery status information while their order is in transit. Inventory synchronisation failures mean customers order items that are not in stock, creating disappointment at the moment of fulfilment rather than at the point of order.
