LastPass is a password manager that stores encrypted credentials in a cloud vault, with browser extensions and mobile apps for autofill across devices.

What is LastPass?

LastPass became one of the most widely adopted password managers in the world, largely because it was among the first to offer a genuinely usable free tier that worked across browsers and devices. Founded in 2008 and later acquired by LogMeIn (now GoTo), LastPass stores encrypted credentials in the cloud, synchronizes them across devices, and auto-fills logins in the browser through extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Business and enterprise tiers add single sign-on, directory integrations, and admin policy controls. At its peak, LastPass claimed over 33 million users and 100,000 business customers.

LastPass operates a zero-knowledge encryption model in which user vault data is encrypted on-device before being uploaded to LastPass servers — meaning LastPass itself cannot read stored passwords. Authentication to the service triggers decryption on the client side using the master password. The browser extension handles auto-fill injection, the mobile apps sync with cloud vault data, and the LastPass web interface provides a browser-accessible vault. All of these surfaces depend on LastPass's authentication API and vault sync infrastructure being available to unlock and update vault data.

When LastPass is down or degraded, the impact on users' daily productivity is immediate and broad. The browser extension fails to populate saved credentials, forcing manual password entry or lockout from services. On mobile, the autofill service cannot retrieve credentials, blocking app logins. Vault access through the website fails entirely when the authentication backend is unavailable. New passwords saved while offline fail to sync when the connection is restored. Emergency access requests cannot be sent or received. For business users, admin console operations and SSO logins to provisioned applications are blocked when the platform is degraded.

Outage.gg tracks LastPass availability using community reports from users across all platforms. If the LastPass extension is not working, vault sync is failing, or the app is locked out, the live status page shows real-time disruption data.
