Limelight Networks was one of the early specialist CDN providers, founded in 2001 at a time when content delivery was a distinct infrastructure category rather than a commodity service bundled into cloud platforms. The company built a private fibre backbone connecting its points of presence — a meaningful architectural choice that reduced dependence on commodity internet transit and gave it more control over end-to-end latency for media streaming workloads. Rebranded as Edgio in 2022 following the acquisition of Verizon Media's Edgecast platform, the combined company positioned itself as a full edge cloud provider with CDN, edge compute, and streaming capabilities. Edgio subsequently faced financial difficulties and filed for bankruptcy in 2024, creating significant uncertainty for its customer base.

The private network backbone that defined Limelight's original differentiation was retained in the Edgio rebrand and supplemented with the larger PoP footprint that Verizon Media's network brought to the combination. The streaming infrastructure, in particular, handles high-throughput video delivery for media companies with SLA requirements around sustained bitrate and low rebuffering ratios. Edge compute capability — executing JavaScript at the edge before requests reach the origin — allows dynamic content manipulation, A/B testing, and authentication enforcement without a round trip to a central server.

CDN infrastructure events at Edgio can produce widespread downstream impact because the platform delivers content for major media and e-commerce properties. A degradation event on Edgio's network affects every customer using the platform, not just a single site, meaning that multiple high-traffic destinations can become simultaneously degraded from the perspective of end users. Anycast routing failures that do not cleanly fail over to healthy PoPs cause persistent delivery failures rather than graceful degradation. The financial and operational uncertainty following the bankruptcy process adds a layer of reliability risk that is distinct from the technical infrastructure quality of the platform itself.
