Lumen Technologies, formerly CenturyLink, provides fiber internet, enterprise networking, and cloud connectivity to businesses and residential customers across the US.

What is Lumen / CenturyLink?

Lumen Technologies — operating its consumer broadband services under the CenturyLink and Quantum Fiber brands — has a telecommunications heritage stretching back to 1930 when it was founded as a telephone cooperative in rural Louisiana. Through acquisitions including Qwest Communications and Level 3 Communications, Lumen grew into a major national provider serving both enterprise and consumer markets. Today, Lumen operates one of the largest IP backbone networks in the world, carrying a significant portion of global internet traffic through its network infrastructure, while also providing DSL, fiber broadband, and voice services to residential customers across more than 35 states.

Lumen's enterprise business, which generates the majority of its revenue, provides wide-area networking, fiber connectivity, managed security, and cloud services to large corporations and government agencies. The CenturyLink/Quantum Fiber consumer division offers broadband via its DSL plant in rural and suburban markets and through its progressively expanding fiber-to-the-home Quantum Fiber network. The MyLumen portal and CenturyLink app provide account management, outage reporting, and technical support. Lumen's global IP backbone is also a critical transit provider for other carriers — outages in Lumen's BGP routing infrastructure have caused significant internet disruptions for third-party networks in past incidents.

Lumen outages vary significantly by service tier. Consumer DSL customers experience complete line failures or extreme speed degradation when loop or DSLAM issues arise. Quantum Fiber customers lose connectivity when ONT or fiber distribution issues occur. The CenturyLink and MyLumen portals become unreachable during backend IT outages, preventing customers from reporting faults or viewing account information. Enterprise customers experience BGP route flaps or loss of MPLS circuit connectivity during core network events. In several notable historical incidents, Lumen's backbone routing issues caused partial internet outages visible to users well outside the CenturyLink customer base.

Outage.gg monitors Lumen and CenturyLink service availability using community reports from residential and business customers. If your CenturyLink or Quantum Fiber connection is down, or Lumen enterprise services are affected, the live status page shows real-time disruption data.
