MEGA is an end-to-end encrypted cloud storage and file sharing service based in New Zealand, offering 20 GB of free storage with a strong focus on user privacy.

What is MEGA?

Mega launched in January 2013, exactly one year after the FBI takedown of Megaupload, with Kim Dotcom's involvement giving it immediate global attention. The platform's founding privacy commitment was genuinely novel at the time: zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption where even Mega itself cannot access users' file contents. All encryption and decryption happens client-side, which means file keys never leave the user's control. That architecture attracted users who were concerned about government access to cloud-stored data following the Snowden revelations that arrived just months after the service launched.

Mega operates on a distributed infrastructure with multiple data centers, offering cloud storage and sync services across web, desktop, and mobile. The end-to-end encryption architecture means the storage backend handles only ciphertext — it has no knowledge of file contents, names, or structure beyond what is encrypted. The MEGAsync desktop client handles local sync, the mobile apps provide camera backup and file management, and the web interface runs entirely in-browser. Large file transfers are handled through Mega's own transfer engine rather than relying on browser download mechanics.

When Mega has service problems, the encryption architecture creates some unusual failure modes compared to conventional cloud storage. If the key exchange infrastructure is degraded, users can see their files listed but cannot decrypt them — the data is present but inaccessible. Upload and download transfer failures are common during infrastructure incidents, with large files timing out partway through transfer. The MEGAsync client may lose its connection to the backend and fail to reconnect automatically. Mobile apps on iOS and Android can fail to authenticate or display blank file browsers when the API layer is degraded.

Outage.gg tracks Mega service status using real-time community reports from users worldwide. If uploads are failing, files are not decrypting, or the web app is not loading, the live status page shows current impact from the Mega community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about MEGA outages and server status.

You can check the live MEGA server status at outage.gg/services/mega. The page shows real-time community-submitted outage reports, an hourly trend chart, and the current health status.

MEGA can stop working for a number of reasons including scheduled maintenance windows, unexpected server failures, network infrastructure problems, or DDoS attacks. Check the live status page on Outage.gg for the latest community reports to see if others are experiencing the same issue.

Go to outage.gg/services/mega and click the "Report an Issue" button. Your report is counted immediately and helps confirm whether a problem is widespread. Reports from multiple users trigger a status change visible to everyone watching the page.

Click the "Notify Me" bell button on the MEGA status page at outage.gg/services/mega. Create a free account and we will send you an email the moment MEGA comes back online — no app download required.

Many services maintain official status pages with planned maintenance notices. Outage.gg aggregates real-time community-reported outages which often surface faster than official channels.
