What is Microsoft Entra ID?
Microsoft Entra ID — rebranded from Azure Active Directory in 2023 — is the cloud identity and access management platform that underpins authentication for Microsoft 365, Azure, and thousands of third-party SaaS applications integrated via SAML, OIDC, and OAuth. Originally launched as Azure AD in 2004, it has grown into one of the most widely deployed identity platforms in the world, used by organizations ranging from small businesses to Fortune 500 enterprises and government agencies. Every Microsoft 365 login — Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive — passes through Entra ID. Enterprise app SSO, Conditional Access policies, multi-factor authentication via Microsoft Authenticator, and Privileged Identity Management all run on the same infrastructure.
Entra ID operates as a globally distributed, highly redundant service across Microsoft's Azure datacenters. Authentication tokens are issued by Entra ID's token service and validated by downstream applications. MFA challenges route through the Microsoft Authenticator app or SSPR (self-service password reset) flows. Application registrations configure trust relationships between Entra ID and SaaS apps using federation protocols. Entra Connect (formerly Azure AD Connect) synchronizes on-premises Active Directory with the cloud tenant. When any layer of this chain degrades, the failure propagates through every service that relies on Entra ID for identity.
