The company positioned itself as an open-weights alternative to the closed API model, but its commercial API — La Plateforme — quickly became a serious production choice for developers who wanted frontier-quality inference without routing everything through OpenAI or Anthropic.

Mistral's API infrastructure is hosted primarily in European data centers, making it attractive for organizations with GDPR and data residency requirements. The company runs a diverse model lineup including Mistral Large, Mistral Small, Codestral (optimized for code), and Mixtral (mixture-of-experts architecture), each with different compute profiles. Mixture-of-experts models like Mixtral 8x7B are particularly demanding to serve at scale because only a subset of the model activates per token — efficient in theory, but operationally complex when thousands of concurrent API users hit the system simultaneously.
