What is NordPass?
NordPass entered the password manager market in 2019, built by Nord Security — the team behind NordVPN. While NordVPN had already established a large user base, NordPass was designed as a purpose-built credential management product rather than a VPN extension. It uses XChaCha20 encryption for vault data, a relatively modern choice compared to AES-256 implementations common in older password managers. NordPass offers personal and business tiers, with the business product adding centralized admin controls, user provisioning, and company item sharing. The service operates across browser extensions for major browsers, native desktop apps for Windows and macOS, and iOS and Android apps.
The NordPass vault model follows a zero-knowledge architecture similar to other leading password managers — credentials are encrypted on the client before transmission to Nord's servers. Vault synchronization requires an authenticated session, and the browser extension communicates with backend APIs to pull credentials on demand or after a sync event. NordPass accounts are linked to Nord Security's broader account system, which also governs NordVPN and other Nord products. This unified account structure means a Nord account authentication issue can affect multiple Nord services simultaneously.
