Old School RuneScape

Old School RuneScape exists because players refused to let the past die. When Jagex backed up the 2007 version of RuneScape and asked players whether they wanted the old game back alongside the modern one, the community voted overwhelmingly yes. OSRS relaunched in 2013 and has since grown into something remarkable: a game from nearly two decades ago that draws hundreds of thousands of concurrent players, sustains a thriving economy built on in-game items, and hosts a global competitive scene around high-level bossing and speedrunning. The game is updated regularly through community polls that require 75 percent approval before any change ships.

OSRS runs on a client-server architecture where nearly all game logic executes on Jagex's servers. The official client runs in a browser, as a downloadable desktop client, and on iOS and Android via the mobile app. A substantial portion of the community uses RuneLite, a community-developed open-source client that Jagex officially sanctions. The game's economy — driven by the Grand Exchange, a centralised marketplace — means that extended downtime has real in-game financial consequences, since time-sensitive skilling and bossing sessions represent measurable opportunity cost to dedicated players.

When OSRS servers go down, players are disconnected mid-session with no save state for active skilling or combat. Worlds — individual server instances — may become unavailable while others stay online. Login servers failing separately from game worlds mean players can see the world list but cannot authenticate. Updates being deployed cause scheduled maintenance windows, and if a deployment rolls back unexpectedly, extended downtime follows. The mobile client and desktop client can also diverge in which worlds they can access during partial outages.
