Optimum / Altice

Optimum — operated by Altice USA — is a major cable operator serving the New York tri-state area and parts of the southern and western United States. The brand traces back to Cablevision's Optimum service, founded in 1985, and was acquired by Altice USA in 2016 when the French telecom company expanded aggressively into the US market. Altice USA subsequently merged its Cablevision/Optimum and Suddenlink systems under the Optimum brand. The combined company serves millions of homes and businesses across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and other states with cable internet, television, and phone service.

Optimum's network is a hybrid fiber-coax infrastructure supplemented by Altice's ongoing fiber-to-the-home build-out in certain markets. The Optimum app provides account management, bill payment, internet usage monitoring, and customer support. Altice One set-top boxes combine cable TV and internet in a single device with cloud DVR capabilities. Optimum's broadband infrastructure has been the subject of significant investment and scrutiny — Altice USA has faced regulatory attention in New York for service quality, leading to commitments around infrastructure improvement and customer service. Business services are delivered through Optimum Business and Lightpath enterprise divisions.

Optimum outages present in patterns typical of HFC cable networks. Node or amplifier failures take down service for clusters of homes in an area, often preceded by intermittent performance degradation. Widespread regional outages occur when headend equipment or fiber backhaul serving multiple nodes fails. The Optimum app fails to authenticate when Altice's backend management services are affected, blocking account access. Altice One boxes return "no signal" or service error screens when the video head end or conditional access systems are degraded. Internet speed drops — common on HFC networks during peak hours due to shared capacity — can be precursors to more significant node-level failures.
