Oura Ring launched from a Finnish startup in 2013 with a focus that distinguished it from the wrist-worn wearable market: a ring form factor with sensors positioned to capture photoplethysmography, skin temperature, and movement data from the finger, where blood flow is more consistent and sensor readings more accurate than from the wrist. The resulting Health Score, Sleep Score, and Readiness Score outputs — synthesised from heart rate variability, resting heart rate, sleep stage analysis, and temperature trends — gained a devoted following among biohackers, athletes, and people managing chronic health conditions. The company gained mainstream attention when NBA teams used Oura rings to monitor player health during COVID-19 bubble protocols.

Oura Ring operates on a sync-to-cloud architecture. The ring itself captures raw sensor data throughout the day and night, storing it in onboard memory. When the user opens the Oura app and the ring is in Bluetooth range, it syncs the stored data to the app, which then uploads it to Oura's cloud backend for processing. The scoring algorithms — the core product output that gives Oura its value — run server-side in the cloud, not locally on the ring or the phone. This means that data collection is resilient to cloud issues (the ring keeps capturing data regardless), but score generation, trend analysis, and the app's core insights are unavailable until the cloud connection is restored and data has been processed.

Oura cloud problems typically present as a sync that completes — the ring uploads its stored data — but the app fails to update scores or displays a processing error. Sleep data from the previous night appears raw or as a placeholder rather than showing the Sleep Score breakdown. Readiness Score displays "calculating" indefinitely. The trend graphs on the app's timeline stop updating with recent data. Users who wake up and check their overnight sleep score — a daily routine for many Oura subscribers — find incomplete or missing data during cloud processing backlogs. Integration with Apple Health, which receives data from Oura, also lags when the Oura-side processing is delayed.
