PetSmart opened its first store in Phoenix in 1986 under the name PetFood Warehouse and grew into the largest pet specialty retailer in North America by store count. Taken private by BC Partners in 2015 in what was then the largest retail leveraged buyout in history, PetSmart subsequently acquired Chewy.com in 2017 in a move designed to build an e-commerce counterweight to Amazon's growing pet category.
