PLDT — the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company — has been the backbone of Philippine telecommunications since 1928, making it one of the oldest continuously operating telecom companies in Southeast Asia. The company operates both the fixed-line infrastructure inherited from its monopoly era and, through subsidiary Smart Communications, one of the Philippines' two dominant mobile networks. PLDT's position at the intersection of fixed broadband, enterprise connectivity, and mobile makes it the infrastructure provider that most other Philippine digital services depend on, either directly or indirectly through interconnection. The duopoly between PLDT-Smart and Globe has defined Philippine mobile and broadband pricing for decades.

Smart's mobile network — marketed under the Smart, TNT, and Sun Cellular brands — shares backend systems with the PLDT fixed broadband infrastructure in ways that make online account management particularly important for subscribers managing multiple products. The GigaLife and MySmartDeals apps handle prepaid load purchasing, postpaid plan management, bill payment, and data add-on purchases. Prepaid load is central to how a large portion of Smart's subscriber base operates: millions of users rely on small, frequent load purchases to maintain service, making the load crediting system one of the highest-stakes parts of Smart's digital infrastructure. eSIM availability has expanded for postpaid subscribers as Philippine carriers invest in modernising their provisioning infrastructure.

Smart network problems have become familiar to Philippine subscribers: signal bars appear healthy while data refuses to move, or calls connect but break up immediately on VoLTE. Typhoon-affected areas routinely see site damage that takes extended periods to repair, making prolonged partial outages more common than in countries with less typhoon exposure. Load purchases made through GCash, GrabPay, or convenience stores credit successfully at the payment processor but fail to reflect on the Smart account, leaving subscribers without service despite having paid. Postpaid customers find the GigaLife app unable to load current bill details or data usage during billing cycle close periods.
