Plivo is a cloud communications platform providing SMS and voice APIs for sending notifications, verification codes, and building telephony apps.

What is Plivo?

Plivo launched in 2011 as a developer-focused cloud communications platform providing voice and SMS APIs for building telephony features into applications — a competitor to Twilio in the CPaaS (Communications Platform as a Service) space. The company was founded by Venky Balasubramanian and Michael Ricordeau as a Y Combinator startup and grew by offering competitive pricing and a simpler pricing model than some alternatives, attracting developers and startups building SMS notifications, phone verification flows, IVR systems, and call center functionality. Plivo added browser-based calling through the WebSDK and a prebuilt contact center product called Plivo CX.

Plivo's infrastructure sits in the critical path of any application built on its APIs. When a business sends an OTP SMS for account verification through Plivo, or routes a customer support call through Plivo's voice infrastructure, the reliability of that interaction depends entirely on Plivo's backend performing correctly. Unlike consumer messaging apps where a failed message is an inconvenience, SMS OTP failures can lock users out of accounts or prevent transactions from completing. Call center interactions through Plivo affect real customers experiencing issues who need support, making Plivo infrastructure health a business-continuity concern for the companies that build on it.

When Plivo's platform has problems, the failure modes are visible through API error responses and degraded delivery. The SMS API may return HTTP 5xx errors, causing sending applications to fail without delivering messages. Messages that appear to have been accepted by the API — returning a 200 response — may nevertheless fail to deliver to recipients when the SMSC connections are degraded. Voice calls initiated through the API may fail to connect or drop mid-call. The Plivo console, used to monitor message delivery reports and call detail records, may fail to load or show incomplete data during backend degradation. Number provisioning requests may fail, blocking the onboarding of new phone numbers to accounts.

Outage.gg tracks Plivo service status using community reports from developers and businesses using the platform. If the API is returning errors, SMS is failing to deliver, or voice calls are not connecting, the live status page shows current impact from the Plivo developer community.
