PSEG serves electric and gas customers in New Jersey through its subsidiary PSE&G — Public Service Electric and Gas — reaching roughly 2.2 million electric and 1.9 million gas customers across much of the state. New Jersey sits in the middle of the nor'easter track and was among the hardest-hit states during Hurricane Sandy in 2012, an event that reshaped how PSEG thinks about both physical grid resilience and digital customer communication. The My Account portal and PSEG app handle billing, payment, outage reporting, and the outage center map that New Jersey customers rely on during major storm events.

PSEG's outage map has been refined through multiple major storm cycles — Sandy in 2012, Winter Storm Jonas in 2016, and the series of nor'easters that hit New Jersey through the late 2010s and 2020s. Each event generated concentrated concurrent traffic to the outage center and produced lessons about what the system needed to handle. The map aggregates field crew data and customer reports to produce restoration timelines by area. PSEG also provides gas service, which adds pipeline emergency reporting and gas leak workflows to the portal's feature set beyond what pure electric utilities maintain.

When PSEG's customer platform has problems, they tend to appear at the login and payment stages first. Authentication accepts credentials but fails to complete the session establishment, landing users on blank or error pages rather than account dashboards. Payment processing returns generic errors at the confirmation step after all form fields have been completed, with no receipt and no confirmation of charge status. The outage map renders the New Jersey geography but does not load the incident layer, so the map appears clear during an active storm event. The mobile app on both iOS and Android can lose its background session and return users to the login screen without notification.
