Rise of Kingdoms — originally titled Rise of Civilizations at launch — is Lilith Games' massively multiplayer real-time strategy game that places players on a shared kingdom map where city building, troop training, and coordinated alliance warfare play out in continuous real time. Launched in 2018, the game has become one of the most commercially successful strategy titles in the mobile market, particularly notable for the depth and duration of its kingdom progression cycle: early kingdoms merge and pass through stages over months of real-time play, culminating in the Kingdom vs. Kingdom (KvK) event that pits alliances from different kingdoms against each other. The investment required for competitive play drives a premium spending tier that makes RoK one of the highest ARPU games in mobile.

Rise of Kingdoms' server architecture runs separate kingdoms — numbered server shards — that each host a distinct real-time world shared by tens of thousands of players. Alliance features, march coordination, and the KvK server infrastructure all require the backend to be healthy for coordinated gameplay to function. The Lilith account system handles gem purchases and commander acquisition through the wheel and commander chest systems, tying purchase delivery directly to account health. Time-sensitive events — including KvK battles with defined start windows — make server downtime particularly costly since the competitive window cannot be easily replayed.

Server problems at Rise of Kingdoms surface in ways specific to the real-time strategy format. Troop marches appear frozen on the kingdom map, their timers not advancing, while the backend continues processing the march silently — causing players to lose visibility into their armies' positions during critical alliance battle windows. Alliance rally attacks fail to launch when the rally creation request cannot reach the server, wasting the march time of all players who had joined the rally. Gem purchases in the store process on the payment side but do not credit to the account, requiring ticket-based manual resolution. During KvK flag capture phases, the flag ownership state fails to update correctly during server stress events, leading to capture credit disputes between alliances.
