Scaleway
Scaleway is a French cloud provider offering virtual machines, managed Kubernetes, object storage, and serverless functions from European data centers.
What is Scaleway?
Scaleway is a French cloud provider with roots going back to 1999 as the hosting arm of Iliad, the French telecom group. The company relaunched as Scaleway Elements in 2019 with a redesigned product portfolio and a renewed focus on the European developer market, competing directly with OVHcloud for French and broader European cloud workloads. Scaleway has taken a notable position on environmental sustainability — its data centres in Paris and Amsterdam draw on renewable energy sources, and the company publishes power usage effectiveness data. ARM-based compute instances, available alongside the standard x86 portfolio, make Scaleway one of the few cloud providers with genuine multi-architecture instance choice.
Scaleway's product range covers Instances (virtual compute), Elastic Metal (bare metal), Kubernetes Kapsule (managed Kubernetes), Object Storage (S3-compatible), Block Storage, Managed Databases (PostgreSQL and MySQL), and Serverless Functions and Containers. The Scaleway console and API manage all of these products, with the API serving as the canonical interface for customers using Terraform, Pulumi, or custom deployment tooling. The GDPR-compliant data residency within the EU — with regions in Paris, Amsterdam, and Warsaw — is a key selling point for European businesses with regulatory data localisation requirements.
Scaleway service disruptions follow patterns common to cloud infrastructure providers, with a few region-specific characteristics. API timeouts during control plane operations block instance creation, network configuration, and storage provisioning simultaneously for customers using automation against the Scaleway API. Block storage I/O degradation surfaces as elevated latency on volume reads and writes, causing database performance degradation for applications that use Scaleway block storage as their primary data disk. Object storage API errors appear as failed S3 PUT or GET requests, with applications logging connection refused or 503 errors against the Scaleway object storage endpoint. Instance network issues within the private network layer affect intra-cluster communication for Kubernetes workloads, causing pod-to-pod latency increases and intermittent connection failures.
Outage.gg tracks Scaleway service status using real-time community reports from developers and cloud engineers. If the Scaleway API is timing out, storage I/O is degraded, or instance provisioning is failing, the live status page shows current impact from the Scaleway user community.
Common Scaleway Problems
Issues users most frequently report when Scaleway is having problems.
Service unavailability
API calls are failing, dashboards are unreachable, or the service is returning 5xx errors.
Slow performance / high latency
Response times are significantly above normal, causing timeouts and degraded user experience.
Authentication failures
API keys, OAuth tokens, or SSO logins are being rejected unexpectedly.
Data sync & storage issues
Files, databases, or synced data are not updating, missing, or inaccessible.
