Schoology is a K-12 and higher-education learning management system used by schools and districts to deliver coursework, assessments, and parent communication.
What is Schoology?
Schoology launched in 2009 as a learning management system with a social-network-influenced design — a course feed that looked more like Facebook than Blackboard — aimed at making LMS adoption feel natural rather than forced on students and teachers. PowerSchool acquired Schoology in 2019, integrating it with the leading student information system to create a tightly coupled gradebook-to-SIS workflow that reduces the data entry burden for teachers. That PowerSchool integration has made Schoology the preferred LMS in many districts that standardised on PowerSchool for student data management.
The platform handles course content delivery, assignment creation, submission and grading workflows, discussion boards, assessments, and the grade book. The PowerSchool integration syncs grades entered in Schoology's grade book directly to the PowerSchool SIS, making Schoology the system of record for academic performance data in integrated districts. LTI integrations bring external content and tools — Khan Academy, Nearpod, Turnitin, and others — into the Schoology course shell so students access everything from one location.
When Schoology has problems, the impact cascades through both the LMS and the SIS simultaneously in districts where the integration is active. Students attempting to submit assignments find the submission interface failing to accept uploads or returning server errors after the file is attached. Grade book entries made by teachers fail to save and sync to PowerSchool, causing discrepancies between what teachers entered and what the SIS reflects.
