SoftBank is one of Japan's three major mobile carriers, providing 4G and 5G smartphone plans, home fiber broadband, and corporate telecommunications services.

What is SoftBank?

SoftBank Corp. — distinct from its parent SoftBank Group — operates Japan's third-largest mobile network by subscriber count, competing against NTT Docomo and KDDI/au. Founded in 1981 by Masayoshi Son as a software distributor, SoftBank transformed into a telecommunications company through its 2006 acquisition of Vodafone Japan, then expanded its brand recognition globally through its majority ownership of Sprint (since merged with T-Mobile) and its prominent technology investment fund. In Japan, SoftBank's mobile business serves tens of millions of subscribers through its 4G and 5G networks, as well as through its subsidiary brands Y!mobile and LINEMO.

SoftBank Japan's network covers the major frequency bands including 900 MHz for broad coverage, 1.7 GHz and 2.1 GHz for urban capacity, and millimeter-wave spectrum for high-density 5G. The My SoftBank app and web portal allow customers to check data usage, manage plans, pay bills, and configure services. SoftBank also operates SoftBank Air, a home internet product using fixed wireless access over LTE and 5G equipment. Its enterprise division provides cloud and networking solutions to corporate customers in Japan. Yahoo Japan, an internet platform in which SoftBank holds a significant interest through Z Holdings (now LY Corporation), has separate but related digital infrastructure.

SoftBank outages in Japan tend to affect a geographically concentrated but densely populated customer base. Mobile calls fail with congestion or connection errors when network infrastructure is degraded. Data service becomes unavailable or severely degraded in affected areas. My SoftBank app logins fail when the authentication backend is down. SoftBank Air home internet goes offline when the fixed wireless base stations serving a customer's area are affected. In significant incidents — like the December 2018 nationwide outage caused by Ericsson software issues — millions of customers lost service simultaneously, underscoring the risks of monoculture in network equipment suppliers.

Outage.gg collects SoftBank service reports from customers in Japan. If your SoftBank mobile or SoftBank Air service is down, data is unavailable, or the My SoftBank app is failing, the live status page shows current disruption data.
