SparkPost
SparkPost is a cloud email delivery service providing transactional and marketing email infrastructure with real-time analytics and high-volume sending APIs.
What is SparkPost?
SparkPost was founded in 2014 as the commercial spin-off of Message Systems, a company that had been building high-volume email infrastructure software for large enterprises since the late 1990s. The founding team brought deep expertise in email deliverability — the arcane but consequential field of ensuring that legitimate email actually reaches the inbox rather than the spam folder — and built SparkPost as a cloud email API service that inherited that expertise. The platform handles transactional email for some of the highest-volume sending organizations in the world, and it was acquired by Bird (formerly MessageBird) in 2022.
SparkPost's primary value proposition is email deliverability at scale. Its infrastructure manages the IP reputation of shared and dedicated sending pools, processes feedback loops from major ISPs to suppress complaints, handles bounce processing and unsubscribe management, and provides detailed analytics on open rates, click rates, and delivery failures through the signals reporting platform. The Inbound Relay service that routes incoming email to application webhooks adds a receiving infrastructure dependency alongside the sending infrastructure. The SparkPost API is often embedded in application code as the single outbound email channel for an entire product, making its availability equivalent to the product's ability to send any email at all.
When SparkPost has backend problems, the impact on dependent applications is immediate and often invisible to end users — they simply stop receiving transactional emails they expected. Password reset emails fail to arrive. Order confirmation messages do not send. Account verification emails never reach new registrants. The sending application typically logs API errors or timeouts, but the customer experience is simply the absence of a message they were expecting. During deliverability incidents — where SparkPost's sending IPs encounter reputation problems with major ISPs — emails may be accepted by SparkPost but silently deferred or rejected by the receiving mail server, making the failure harder to diagnose than a clean API error.
Outage.gg tracks SparkPost service status using community reports from developers and email operations teams. If the API is down, emails are not sending, or deliverability is significantly degraded, the live status page shows current impact from SparkPost users worldwide.
