Splitgate caught the gaming world largely off guard when its beta relaunch in 2021 drove such overwhelming demand that developer 1047 Games had to delay the full release and spend months simply scaling infrastructure fast enough to handle the player influx. The game's core mechanic — portals in a competitive first-person shooter, applied to frantic arena-style gameplay — was immediately legible to anyone familiar with Portal and classic arena shooters, and the free-to-play model meant the barrier to trying it was zero. 1047 Games later announced a pivot to a full sequel, Splitgate 2, building on the lessons of the original's unexpected success.

As a competitive multiplayer game, Splitgate's entire playable experience is server-dependent. There is no meaningful offline component — the game exists to put players against each other in matches, which requires matchmaking servers to find opponents, game servers to run the actual matches, and account servers to track rank, progression, and cosmetic unlocks. The portal mechanic, which creates synchronized spatial connections between two points on the map, requires tight server-side computation to handle correctly — a desync between what the server believes about portal positions and what clients see produces gameplay-breaking inconsistencies.

When Splitgate's servers have problems, players encounter matchmaking that times out or loops indefinitely without finding a game. Active matches may disconnect mid-play, returning players to the main menu with a server error. Post-match progression — rank points, XP, unlocks — may fail to register when the results backend is degraded. The game's store and cosmetic system may be inaccessible, though this affects the experience less acutely than matchmaking failures. During peak concurrent user moments — game launches, free content drops — the server infrastructure can be overwhelmed, producing widely shared reports of unavailability.
