Teamfight Tactics is Riot's auto-battler in the League of Legends universe, where eight players draft champions and build synergy comps to be the last standing.

What is Teamfight Tactics?

Teamfight Tactics arrived in June 2019 as Riot Games' answer to the auto battler craze that Dota Auto Chess had ignited, and it landed with the full weight of the League of Legends player base behind it. Within days it had millions of players, and its integration directly into the League of Legends client gave it instant distribution at a scale that standalone competitors could not match. TFT distinguished itself through rapid set rotations — completely replacing the champion pool, items, and mechanics every few months — which keeps the game feeling fresh to long-term players and lowers the barrier for new ones to learn from scratch.

TFT runs on Riot's shared game infrastructure, meaning the authentication, social, and matchmaking layers are shared with League of Legends and other Riot titles. The mobile version, launched in 2020, synchronises account progress with the PC client, including ranked standing and Tactician cosmetics. Competitive play in TFT is structured around a ladder with seasonal rank resets and dedicated Ranked Hyper Roll and Double Up modes. Riot's backend handles match state, composition tracking, and trait calculations server-side to prevent cheating and ensure game integrity.

When Riot's servers have problems, TFT players experience specific failure modes. Ranked matches that disconnect mid-game may register as losses even when the disconnection was server-caused, which has historically been a major point of frustration in the community. Matchmaking queues fail to pop or time out entirely. The mobile client and PC client can fall out of sync with one another, showing incorrect rank or inventory. The Riot Client — the launcher used to access TFT on PC — has its own failure modes, including failed login and patch application errors that block game access entirely.

Outage.gg monitors Teamfight Tactics server status in real time. If TFT is down, ranked matches are disconnecting, or the Riot Client is refusing to launch, the live status page shows current impact from the community.
