TextNow provides free calls and texts to a real US number via Wi-Fi, with optional cellular service available on its own MVNO network for low-cost mobile plans.

What is TextNow?

TextNow took a different approach to mobile service from the start. Rather than selling traditional phone service directly, it built a software platform that assigned free phone numbers over Wi-Fi and data connections, letting users make calls and send texts without a traditional carrier plan. Founded in 2009 in Waterloo, Ontario, the company later added a free wireless tier in the United States backed by T-Mobile network access, turning a VoIP app into something closer to a full-service mobile provider — one that still keeps Wi-Fi calling at the center of its model.

The architecture of TextNow is meaningfully different from a conventional MVNO. Calls and texts are routed through TextNow's own VoIP infrastructure rather than the traditional telephony stack, which gives the company more flexibility on pricing but also means that call quality depends on internet connectivity at both ends. The wireless data service, where offered, runs on T-Mobile's network under an MVNO arrangement, while the app itself handles all account management, number assignment, and communication routing.

Outages on TextNow can originate from multiple layers simultaneously. The app itself can have authentication problems, push notification failures, or calling engine bugs following an update. The VoIP routing infrastructure can degrade independently, causing calls to drop or audio to break up. When the T-Mobile network has issues, customers using the wireless data tier lose connectivity at the carrier level. Identifying which layer is responsible requires looking at whether Wi-Fi users are also affected or only those relying on cellular data.

Outage.gg tracks TextNow service problems using real-time community reports from app and wireless users. If TextNow calling is broken, messages are not sending, or the app is not loading, the live status page shows whether the problem is widespread.
