Viasat

Viasat has been one of the primary satellite broadband providers serving rural and remote markets for decades, building its consumer business on geostationary satellite technology that reaches locations no terrestrial broadband option can serve. Founded in 1986 as a defense communications company, Viasat expanded into consumer satellite broadband and has progressively launched higher-capacity satellites — the ViaSat-1, ViaSat-2, and ViaSat-3 series — to increase bandwidth and reduce per-gigabyte costs for subscribers. The ViaSat-3 constellation, once fully deployed, aims to deliver faster speeds and higher data allowances than previous generations. Viasat also provides in-flight connectivity to airlines worldwide, giving it a footprint beyond the residential market.

Viasat's residential broadband service delivers internet via a dish antenna installed at the customer's home pointing to a geostationary satellite approximately 35,786 kilometres above the Earth. This distance introduces fundamental latency — typically 600–700 milliseconds round-trip — that is inherent to geostationary satellite physics. The Viasat app allows customers to monitor data usage against their plan's priority data allowance, view account information, and manage services. Viasat's ground station network connects the satellite infrastructure to the terrestrial internet backbone. Equipment at the customer site — the dish, the satellite modem, and the router — all participate in the connectivity chain.

Viasat service disruptions span several distinct scenarios. Satellite capacity issues — which can occur when high demand exhausts beam capacity over a geographic area — result in reduced speeds for all customers in that beam, often experienced as severe throttling rather than a hard outage. Ground station or gateway failures cut off all customers whose data routes through the affected gateway. Physical dish misalignment caused by wind, weather, or settling disrupts the signal entirely. The Viasat modem losing its provisioning connection causes authentication failures that prevent internet access even when the satellite signal is strong. App errors during account or data management are separate from, but often coincide with, service quality issues.
