VK (VKontakte)

VKontakte — universally shortened to VK — launched in 2006 as a social network for Russian university students, clearly inspired by Facebook's early model but quickly evolving its own character and feature set. Founded by Pavel Durov, who later founded Telegram after departing VK under pressure from Russian investors and government interests, the platform became the dominant social network across Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and much of the Russian-speaking diaspora. VK hosts social networking, messaging, music streaming, video hosting, payments, gaming, and a developer ecosystem, making it less a single service than a consumer internet platform in its own right.

VK Company — which also operates the Odnoklassniki network and a range of other Russian internet properties — is majority-owned by entities closely connected to Russian state interests following a series of ownership changes that began when Durov departed in 2014. The platform operates data centres within Russia, subject to Russian data localisation requirements. VK's music service offers one of the largest unlicensed music catalogues historically available on any social platform, a feature that drove enormous engagement particularly in markets where legal streaming services were expensive or unavailable.
