Vonage provides cloud-based communications APIs and business phone solutions, enabling voice, video, and messaging for developers and enterprises.

What is Vonage?

Vonage pioneered consumer VoIP in the early 2000s, making it the company most Americans associated with internet-based phone service when broadband adoption was just beginning. Founded in 2001 in Holmdel, New Jersey, Vonage built its reputation on offering cheap residential phone service that worked through a small adapter plugged into a home router — a disruptive proposition when landline bills from incumbents like AT&T routinely exceeded $40 monthly for basic service. The company went public in 2006 and later pivoted significantly toward business communication APIs, acquiring Nexmo in 2016 to build out a programmable communications platform. Ericsson acquired Vonage in 2022 for $6.2 billion.

The modern Vonage platform — particularly the Vonage Communications Platform (VCP) built on the Nexmo API foundation — is a programmable communications stack offering voice, SMS, video, and messaging APIs for developers. The Voice API uses WebRTC and SIP for call management, with call control handled through real-time webhooks that allow applications to dynamically route calls, play audio, record conversations, and connect participants. The SMS API connects to carrier networks globally for transactional and promotional messaging. The Video API (originally TokBox) provides WebRTC-based video conferencing infrastructure for applications that need to embed video calling.

API outages at Vonage affect the applications built on top of it rather than just Vonage's own products. Voice API failures break any application using programmable calling — appointment reminder systems stop dialing, IVR applications return errors when calls are placed, call tracking platforms lose the ability to route calls to correct destinations. SMS API disruptions halt delivery of OTP codes, shipping notifications, and appointment alerts across thousands of downstream applications. Video API outages take embedded video experiences offline for end users who may not know Vonage powers the feature. The breadth of the developer ecosystem means Vonage service issues show up across many unrelated-seeming applications simultaneously.
