Wemo makes Wi-Fi-enabled smart plugs, light switches, and dimmers that integrate with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit.

What is Wemo?

Wemo launched in 2012 as Belkin's entry into the nascent smart home market, offering Wi-Fi-connected smart plugs, light switches, and dimmers at a time when most competitors required a dedicated hub. The no-hub approach — devices connected directly to the home Wi-Fi network and controlled through Belkin's cloud — was genuinely novel at the time and made Wemo products significantly easier to set up than alternatives that required a separate bridge or controller. Over the following decade, Wemo expanded its lineup while also supporting integration with Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant.

Wemo devices operate by connecting to Belkin's cloud infrastructure to receive and relay commands from the app. Even commands issued while on the same local network as the device typically route through the cloud, which means cloud availability is fundamental to basic device control. The Wemo app handles device setup, scheduling, automation rules, and remote access. HomeKit users who have configured Wemo devices through Apple's framework can control them locally through a HomeKit hub like an Apple TV or HomePod, providing some insulation from Wemo cloud outages.

When Wemo cloud services have problems, devices appear offline in the app and stop responding to voice commands through Alexa and Google Assistant. Scheduled automations fail to trigger. The Wemo app may become unable to discover new devices during setup, blocking installation of recently purchased hardware. In some incidents, devices operate normally locally when triggered by a physical switch but cannot be controlled remotely at all. Belkin has deprecated several Wemo product lines over the years, which occasionally strands customers when support infrastructure is retired.

Outage.gg tracks Wemo cloud service status using real-time community reports from customers. If your Wemo devices are showing offline, automations have stopped running, or the app is not connecting, the live status page shows current impact from the Wemo community.
