Xbox Network
Xbox Network is the underlying online infrastructure connecting Xbox players to multiplayer services, cloud saves, and the Microsoft gaming ecosystem.
What is Xbox Network?
Xbox network — formerly and still commonly called Xbox Live — has been the backbone of online console gaming on Xbox hardware since its launch in 2002 with the original Xbox. The service was the first major console online network and set expectations for what multiplayer gaming on a dedicated platform should look like: a unified friend system, voice chat, and consistent multiplayer matchmaking across all titles. Xbox Live Gold became the subscription model for online multiplayer access, later transitioning to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate as the premium tier. The network now serves hundreds of millions of accounts across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs.
Xbox network's infrastructure handles friend lists, presence status (who is online and what they are playing), party chat, multiplayer matchmaking, cloud saves, achievement processing, and the entitlement systems that control access to purchased games and Game Pass library titles. Many of these services are independent components that can fail separately — the friend list might be unavailable while multiplayer gaming continues normally, for instance. The Xbox status page maintained by Microsoft lists individual service components with their health status, and the health of each component affects a different subset of the player experience.
When Xbox network has problems, the failure manifests differently depending on which component is down. Core sign-in failures prevent players from accessing any Xbox features on console or PC, showing a "Try again" error at the account sign-in prompt. Multiplayer and matchmaking failures allow players to access single-player games but block joining or creating online sessions across all titles. Purchase and content failures prevent new game downloads and show previously owned content as locked. Party and communication outages silence party chat and game invitations without affecting gameplay itself. Cloud save failures prevent save data from uploading, creating a risk of progress loss if the console is powered off before saves sync locally.
Outage.gg tracks Xbox network status across all service components using real-time community reports from Xbox and PC players. If Xbox Live is down, sign-in is failing, or multiplayer is unavailable, the live status page shows current impact by service component.
