YouChat
YouChat is You.com's AI assistant with real-time web search capabilities, letting you ask questions and get cited, up-to-date answers.
What is YouChat?
YouChat is the AI assistant component of You.com, a search engine founded in 2021 by Salesforce alumni Richard Socher and Bryan McCann with the goal of building a privacy-respecting, AI-powered alternative to Google. The search engine launched in open beta before ChatGPT had made conversational AI mainstream, making You.com one of the early consumer products to position AI-generated responses alongside traditional web search results. YouChat evolved from a simple chatbot into a multimodal AI assistant capable of generating code, analysing documents, creating images, and answering complex research questions using live web sources.
The You.com platform integrates its AI assistant with real-time web search in a way that grounds responses in current information rather than relying solely on training data with a knowledge cutoff. This approach — sometimes called retrieval-augmented generation — means YouChat can answer questions about recent events, verify facts against live sources, and cite the web pages it used to form a response. The platform has also pursued a personalisation angle, attempting to let users customise which apps and sources appear in their search results. Enterprise and developer tiers extend access through API integrations.
YouChat service degradation takes several forms depending on where the failure occurs. AI response generation failures produce error messages or incomplete outputs where conversational answers should appear, forcing users back to traditional web search results. Real-time web retrieval failures mean the AI cannot access current information, causing it to fall back on training data or explicitly decline to answer time-sensitive questions. Image generation features that rely on integrated diffusion models stop working independently of text generation. API access failures affect developers who have built YouChat capabilities into their own applications or workflows.
Outage.gg tracks YouChat and You.com platform availability through community reports from users and developers. If YouChat is down, AI responses are failing, or the You.com search platform is returning errors, the live status page shows what other users are currently experiencing.
