Zscaler Private Access replaces traditional VPNs by giving users secure, direct access to internal apps without exposing the network.

What is Zscaler Private Access?

Zscaler Private Access represents a different security philosophy than traditional VPNs. Where a VPN grants network-level access — potentially giving a connected user lateral reach across a broad corporate network segment — ZPA enforces application-level access, meaning users can only reach the specific applications they are authorised for, never the surrounding network. The architecture uses lightweight connectors deployed on-premises or in cloud environments that establish outbound tunnels to Zscaler's cloud, so applications never need inbound firewall rules exposed to the internet. ZPA brokers connections between users and applications through the cloud without the application itself being publicly reachable.

ZPA integrates with identity providers — Azure AD, Okta, Ping, and others — to enforce continuous identity-aware access decisions. Every connection request is evaluated against policy, using user identity, device posture score, and application entitlement simultaneously. The App Connector, deployed in data centres and cloud VPCs, maintains persistent outbound tunnels to ZPA's cloud edge. The Zscaler Client Connector on user endpoints handles tunnel establishment and authentication. Both components depend on ZPA's cloud backend for brokering, policy enforcement, and logging, making the cloud plane the critical dependency for all private application access.

ZPA failures are acutely disruptive because they block access to internal applications rather than just slowing internet browsing. App Connector connectivity failures cause entire application segments to become unreachable, appearing to users as if internal applications are simply down. Authentication failures between the client connector and ZPA's identity broker surface as login loops or access denied errors, even for users whose credentials are valid and whose posture meets policy requirements. Policy evaluation delays introduce latency into application connection establishment, making ZPA-mediated applications feel slow even when the application servers themselves are healthy. Application segment configuration changes fail to publish when the ZPA admin backend is degraded.

Outage.gg tracks Zscaler Private Access service status using real-time community reports from IT and security professionals. If ZPA is blocking application access, App Connectors are disconnecting, or policy changes are not taking effect, the live status page shows current impact from the ZPA user community.
